you drag your ears through flower beds and sift out all the cigarettes, you plunge your hand into a tree and take from it it's memories, you hear your mother singing sweet but disregard her melody while mending may and eloise and david with some pale green douglas fir and willow leaves, gently making something breathe.
you use the blood from friends you had to warm the dirt, the leafy patch. the garden grows towards the lake and nothing now quite looks the same. and vines have now so suddenly become something like history.
there is a song, in a or b, that burns down all the forest trees. but when you play the final chord, your capillaries turn to stone. so go ahead and search your chest, the slugs and inchworms know it best.
you drag your ears through flower beds and sift out all the cigarettes, you plunge your hand into a tree and take from it it's memories.

neil sits alone outside a motel in the summer
he checks his phone checks when a friend is coming
and with some make-up on he feels a flutter
wearing the dress he bought for his mother
says his name is paul as he slips under the covers
he makes a joke about how fucking ain't for lovers
he feels the lords embrace in the rubber
he's calling jesus name into the covers
some things feel like a revelation
but we all grow and decompose just the same
no its not the hurting part that heals
but i know that we'll all be okay

Oranges

she wants to believe he's something more
he's eating an orange outside the door
he's a deceiver when he's bored
she's reading the oranges by the door
she's a believer in the relief
that we're all receivers of suffering
becoming a kneeler
checking on a fever
praying to a god defined by his demons
you can leave it all behind
don't you know that don't you know that
you can read it in the rinds
don't you know that don't you know that
she wants to change her name to mary
she kicked the deceiver out the door
she's throwing up from the girl she carries
but the church demands the baby born
now nine months later the baby moans
she sits by the doorstep getting stoned
feeding oranges without feeling
praying she's not defined by her demons
you can leave it all behind
don't you know that don't you know that
you can read it in the rinds
don't you know that don't you know that

Slug

he's a ghost in the dark
call you closer he's a locust eating lark
he's a plague
he's a goat
he's a cave dwelling creature
preaching cud to a slug
sucking blood from the teacher
by the lake outside of town
there's a landfill with some flowers growing fighting with the ground
and in the fall
he's alone
with a view of the steeple
with a drug their calling slug
little brother starts to feel
little brother starts to feel

Brothers:
big brother got bruised by a cannonball
made the news when he threw it down to wichita
little brother just chews on a dirty bomb
calls the girl that works at the telethon
brothers don't bleed
it's a cut of a different kind
grandpa grew trees
now the green runs through our spine
big brother builds pews out of cinderblocks
singing hymns with girl at the telethon
calls a friend when she's out taking local calls
meets him out at a bar outside of wichita
little brother just chews on a dirt bomb
lets his brain melt away in the aftershock
in the flame calls the girl at the telethon
tells her all about the bar outside of wichita
you don't start clean
spines are twisting in the rings
this old tree
been around before you were born

Holy Ghost
01:23
|
|

i know the love of jesus christ i feel it in my throat
but all the cut up butterflies grow demon heads and toes
and from their toes grow little vines that reek of pheromones
and as i choke on jesus christ they sneak up through my nose
and in my bloody body build a church of marrow bones
and in the church one's wearing women's clothing all alone
he gets so old he falls apart while beating off to mold
and in the blood he's seeing jesus christ inside my throat
we all dissolve to thicker dirt than we have ever known
and in the dirt there grows a vine god labeled holy ghost

Blood and Guts

you know that i will always love you
you know that i will never die
you know that i will always love you
you know that i will never die
i got something i need to tell you
i think i am losing my mind
i wake up to all kinds of sirens
grit my teeth and lose of time
i think i've found a type of thinking (thinking) brings me close to losing touch (close to losing touch) dreams turn green then turn real then orange and real spits me out into a dream
i got something i need to tell you
i think i am losing my mind
i moved out and became a writer
mother, father, liver in time
but i wake up to all kinds of sirens
grit my teeth and lose sense of time
while milo writes the sign of the cross
with blood he drained while neil's alive
it's a strange idea
something blooms from dead orange peels
it's neither negative or positive
it's just a thing that is such a strange idea

Milo
04:16
|
|
||
he sees your daughter in a sundress
eating oranges alone
he feels the love of a father
a love his brother ignored
but he is fumbling with a bottle
cause it makes sense just to hold
but don't you worry while he's using
it just helps everything slow
the robotics of a system
built of neurons and bile
regurgitate a type of matter
a sort of natural dye
he paints his face and feels a brightness
glowing brighter inside
the cave he built out of the thorax
of the organist's hide
milo's chewing on a plant
that he bought ages ago
it tastes something like aloe vera
but it closes his throat
and when he's done becomes a prophet
sings the world as its shown
but he is not the first to sing
the overwhelming unknown
all the birds singing
all the plants growing
all the wind blowing
all the bugs crawling
all the birds breaking
all the plants dying
all the wind crawling
and the blood flowing
and the waves breaking
with the birds singing
and the plants speaking
to the wind dying

Dirt
08:16
|

may's a dreamer of the dream that grows in greens and violets
she's a feeler of the things that're only soothed by silence
her frenzied blood flowing to her hands
in everything she sees the aftermath
she's a shell of a cathedral built on leaves and lilacs
she's a feeler of the things that're only soothed by silence
her frenzied blood flowing to her hands
in everything she sees the aftermath
