Moonlight 03:15
Wide awake Eloise walks to the lake to take a picture of the waves at night Dave escapes to his phone and searched her name. Eloise posts the strangest pictures at night Yeah they never look right but there’s something that they say about the moonlight By mistake David liked one Eloise heard her phone buzz her doctor liked her picture at night Eloise thinks this behavior though it’s strange is the same as the frame of the picture of the waves at night Yeah they never feel right but there’s something that they say about the moonlight What’s in a name of a stranger? Eloise sure believes the men in her life look at pictures at night Where’s her dad? and where’s her brother? Leaning over the glow of a phone and a picture of a stranger at night Does it ever feel right? But there’s something that they say about the moonlight.

There’s a bully in your bloodstream There’s goodness too And goodness you have your mama’s voice Daddy’s feet Nana’s eyes and Grandpa’s teeth There’s an element of evil in What you were, at age eighteen You could blame it on the bloodstream, yeah You could blame it on the bloodstream Accept the blood, for how it beats Accept the liar, and the cheat Accept the violence, and defeat Accept that you are, what you eat You eat in secret, you overeat You starve yourself, and then repeat If I met John at seventeen I wouldn’t tell him anything Cause he is evil, but also sweet Wearing outfits, incomplete An emperor without his sleeves A little boy who loves the beach and Now a man at 33 Who sometimes hears a voice repeat: “Yeah you could die, and you’d be clean You could go leave everything” But I am an ocean of living things A lover, friend, and I sing Just like my mom Just like my dad Just like my sister Just like my past

about

John Rossiter (Young Jesus) shares another single, "Moonlight" from his upcoming record, The Fool. Accompanying it is non-album companion track entitled "Bully (live in Esmont, VA)."

Rossiter offers his thoughts on "Moonlight": "When I was 20 I started writing about these characters, David and Eloise. There’s a whole Young Jesus album from about 15 years ago about them. Then they left my life and I forgot about them. Or maybe I tried to forget, to move on from them.

They came back on this record– a lot of things wanted to come through that I didn’t expect on this record. Lappin recorded this one, with guitar and voice. We built some sounds around it, but it’s guided by that connection. All these songs started with me sitting down with a friend, showing them the tune on guitar or piano and singing them these stories. I played bass on this one, rare for me, but I’m glad Lappin pushed me to try it."

On "Bully (live in Esmont, VA)" he adds: "Dawood, Chris, and I were driving through Virginia to play a show on our friend's farm. It was cold and Jay had dug out a few fire pits. The folks living in the house made a stew from roadkill and salad and sides for everyone. They fixed my broken glasses with a hot glue gun.

On that tour, I’d sing Bully over a cassette of the piano loop playing out of my mom’s old tape player. I got up to sing and it was too cold up on the deck, so I went by the fire and sang with everyone sitting in a circle chatting. Dawood recorded it with his phone and that’s the tune."
